Yesterday, Justice Minister Jonathan Attard announced that Malttese lawyers will be eligible to join the Shanghai International Arbitration Centre as arbiters, effectively empowering Chinese companies that do business with Malta or the Maltese. The Labour government has a newfound appreciation for kangaroo courts because these can be used to obfuscate the government’s corruption.
The SHIAC is usually avoided by international companies as they often prefer the London Court of International Arbitration or Singapore International Arbitration Centre. Chinese Courts are not independent and work within their one-party state framework.
The Labour government is strengthening ties with China, with both corrupt interests and political ideology driving this relationship.
