Rubio goes to Budapest and pledges financial aid to Orban’s government: Croatia cuts Russian oil-flow to Hungary and Slovakia

The US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has travelled to Budapest after giving a pro-European speech at the Munich Security Conference. In a press conference with the pro-Russian President, Viktor Orban, the US State Secretary said that the US government may offer financial aid to the Orban government if it faces financial challenges.

Several press reports are stating that Secretary Rubio did not meet the EU’s High Representative Kaja Kallas at the Munich Security Conference. The US State Secretary said his choiceย  to visit Budapest was due to President Donald Trump’s close relationship with President Viktor Orban. The US State Secretary also thanked Hungary for joining the Board of Peace and said that this is further testament to the good relationship between President Trump and Viktor Orban.

As Secretary Rubio travelled to Hungary, Croatia cut the flow of Russian oil through the Adriatic pipeline to Hungary and Slovakia. This means that Hungary has been cut off from its last pipeline-supplied Russian oil-flow after Druzhba pipeline’s flow was halted. Hungary and Slovakia will still receive oil from the Adriatic pipeline but sourced from other sources via shipping.

While in Budapest, the State Secretary signed an agreement with his Hungarian counterpart Pรฉter Szijjรกrtรณ on cooperation over nuclear energy.
