German Chancellor Friedrich Merz clarifies position on German nuclear doctrine

Speaking on the Machtwechsel podcast, the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz , clarified his position on Germany’s nuclear doctrine. At the Munich Security Conference, the German Chancellor said that Germany is working with France to adopt a new nuclear-deterrent. 

He clarified by saying that Germany will not consider owning nuclear weapons and cited the 1970 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty an d the 1990 Two Plus Four Agreement on reunification. Instead, Germany will be placing French nuclear weapons on its soil. The German Chancellor also noted that German Tornado jet fighters also have the capability of carrying US nuclear weapons and this capability can be extended to French and British weapons. The US has up to 100 nuclear-weapons stationed in Europe as part of its nuclear-deterrent.

Meanwhile, previous Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin has also come out in favour of the European nuclear deterrent and has also hinted at the possibility of a return to politics.
