Yesterday, Mexican military forces killed the leader of the multi-national criminal organised grouo, Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho”. The raid by the military forces occurred in the Jalisco state with the aim of capturing him, however he was injured in a gun fight and died en route to Mexico City.
Cartel members retaliated by temporary blockading Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco and fired their weapons in the streets of Jalisco and Guadalajara in a show of force. The Mexican security forces swept into the city of Jalisco and Guadalajara and clashed with cartel members before forcing them out.
The operation to capture El Mencho was conducted with the help of US intelligence, and in retaliation to this fact, some cartel members retaliated by firing their weapons in tourist areas. They US government issued a warning to its citizens in Mexico to stay indoors.
The US government has listed Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organisations. The Mexican drug cartels have grown into multi-national organised criminal groups with networks extending as far as Europe and China while in Mexico they enjoy widespread impunity, control large swathes of territories and also have military capabilities and heavy weaponry. President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has refused to wage war on the cartels, instead opting for social programmes to address youth unemployment in cartel struck areas. However, pressure by the US government has compelled the Mexican government to take several actions including deploying more security forces along the border with the US. Cartel members blame the US for the surge in clampdowns.
