A historic chapter was written in Maltese football as Mgarr United clinced the Assikura Women’s League title for the first time in their history. The Greens secured the championship in style with a clinical 5-0 victory over Valletta at the Charles Abela Stadium. The victory moves Mgarr an insurmountable eleven points clear of their nearest rivals, Swieqi United, sparking jubilant celebrations at the final whistle.
Second-Half Blitz Secures the Crown
Despite their dominance, Mgarr were kept at bay during a goalless first half as Valletta defended resolutely. However, the deadlock was finally broken in the 57th minute when Yulya Carella found the back of the net.
The opening goal triggered a collapse in the Valletta defense. Josline N’Guessan doubled the lead just five minutes later (62’) and added her second of the afternoon in the 66th minute to make it 3-0. The goals continued to flow as Valeria Villegas added a fourth in the 70th minute, before club stalwart Brenda Borg rounded off the scoring in the 75th minute to seal the title in emphatic fashion.
Round-Up: Birkirkara and Swieqi Secure Wins
The championship-winning weekend began on Thursday and Friday with the league’s other heavyweights also picking up maximum points:
- Birkirkara 3–0 Hibernians: On Friday at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, the Stripes proved too strong for Hibernians. Kleydiana Monteiro opened the scoring (32’), followed by goals from Stephania Farrugia (58’) and Stella Francalanza (68’).
- Swieqi United 3–0 San Gwann: On Thursday at the Centenary Stadium, Swieqi United maintained their hold on second place. Jade Flask set them on their way after just five minutes, while a brace from Salamatu Abdulai (14’, 75’) ensured a comfortable evening for the Owls.
While Birkirkara and Swieqi continue to battle for the runner-up spot, the weekend belongs to Mgarr United, who have finally reached the summit of the women’s game in Malta.
