Bravado is not impressive

Yesterday, during his speech at the Nationalist Party’s National Convention, PN Leader Alex Borg made a surprise statement declaring that if elected in government, he will roll0out a mass-transit plan in 100 days.

I am the first person to protest against the Labour Party’s conservative stance on infrastructural projects, but I also share a pinch of the Finance Minister’s conservative approach to public finances. I have no problem taking massive risks myself with my own money, but I have a very different perspective on public finance.

A mass-transit plan should come with a holistic energy plan that provides a secure source of cheap electricity, otherwise the government will be taking on a massive risk with the country’s electricity bill. In addition, Alex Borg is contradicting himself on infrastructure. His party seems to be confused about infrastructure because it is not addressing it in a systematic manner but on a n issue by issue basis preconditioned with local political discourse. The Nationalist Party doesn’t want to build a bridge from Malta to Gozo: this is just one significant infrastructural component that is needed in a mass-transit system. It is also an infrastructure project that is less capital intensive than the more wide-reaching metro project, yet the Nationalist Party wants to build a metro and is afraid of building a bridge.

Confusing and inconsistent to say the least.

Yesterday session of the National Convention was attended by Slovak Ex-Prime Minister Mikulรกลก Dzurinda and EPP Secretary-General Dolors Montserrat.
