There was a very heated debate in Parliament today as Opposition Leader Alex Borg pressed the Prime Minister to reply to serious accusations levelled against him by Judge Lawrence Mintoff. The Judge is accusing the Prime Minister of trying to influence the Judiciary when he was still an MP in the Paqpaqli case and also of using the nomination of Chief Justice for political and partisan purposes.
The Prime Minister is refusing to reply to the accusations in the letter and said that he will give his reply if required to the Standards Commissioner. Meanwhile the Chief Justice has requested the Commission for the Administration of Justice to investigate Judge Lawrence Mintoff for his letter. The Judiciary are prohibited from making any contact with politicians or engaging in political discourse.
It is now highly unlikely that a compromise will be found on the Chief Justice with the Labour government being suspected of intending to push the nomination till after the general election.

More updates will be given tomorrow.
