Judge Lawrence Mintoff up in arms against the Prime Minister: details still emerging

Several media outlets are have published details about a letter that was allegedly sent from Judge Lawrence Mintoff’s email to the government cabinet in protest against the Prime Minister. According to recent reports, the letter criticises the Prime Minister for exerting pressure on the judiciary and objects to his opposition to Mintoff’s appointment as Chief Justice. Judge Lawrence Mintoff was nominated for the Chief Justice position by the Opposition.

Press reports state that the letter alleges that the Prime Minister refused five nominees by the Opposition out of political tact and opportunism, that the Prime Minister made irregular pressure on the judiciary in 2017-2018 as a lawyer and MP when he represented in Court the victims of the Paqpaqli crash, and also accused the Prime Minister of refusing to censor the biography of Dom Mintoff written by Mark Montebello that was published by SKS (more details about this in a separate article, although I confirm that this incident has happened and Judge Wenzu Mintoff made a whole issue about this and was genuinely irritated by it).

My suspicion is that, given the details, the letter is genuinely his, and details about it are being leaked deliberately to harm his chance of getting appointed Chief Justice.

Although the letter seems to have some whistleblowing aspects, it reads more personal. Note that MaltaToday are also running a campaign in favour of the Prime Minister’s choices for Chief Justice.

We should have more details later.
