BREAKING: Nationalist Party proposes Judge Lawrence Mintoff for Chief Justice

Earlier today, previous Nationalist Party MP Franco Debono announced on Facebook that the Nationalist Party has proposed Judge Lawrence (Wenzu) Mintoff. We confirmed this to be true with at least two senior-ranking Nationalist Party officials. Another senior-ranking Nationalist Party official told us that they don’t have an objection to the nomination of Judge Lawrence Mintoff for Chief Justice.

The news belies claims by the Labour Party that the Nationalist Party nominated Judge Edwina Grima for the post. The Nationalist Party deneid the claims.

Judge Wenzu Mintoff has decided against the government in many constitutional sentences and is regarded by many as a trusted and impartial arbiter. He was a Labour Party MP before becoming one of the founders of Alternattiva Demokratika and rejoined the Labour Party in the later years. He became Judge in 2014.
