UN General Assembly approves resolution on Ukraine for just and lasting peace: new EU aid package announced

Earlier today on the 4th anniversary of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, the United Nations General Assembly has approved a resolution calling for just and lasting peace in Ukraine that is effected according to international and the UN charter. Malta also supported in favour of the resolution and gave a statement of support which can be viewed below.

Meanwhile in Kyiv, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met with Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky and paid tribute to the fallen Ukrainian soldiers at Maidan Square. She also announced a new โ‚ฌ100 million aid package to help Ukraine’s electricity infrastructure to meet urgent financing and resource needs after the โ‚ฌ90-billion loan to Ukraine was vetoed by Hungary. Russia has systematically attacked Ukraine‘s energy and electricity infrastructure in a bid to put pressure on Ukraine to capitulate during negotiations, but power has been restored to most of the country.

Russia has lost more than 1.26 million troops in its war against Ukraine and has captured most of the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson Oblasts and the Luhanks and Donetsk Oblasts, while it is still fighting for the Donbas. Talks between Ukraine and Russia have not reached a productive or conclusive end.
