The body of a person in an advanced state of decomposition was found at sea off the Fawwara Cliffs on Friday at around 1.00pm.
Police said they were informed about the discovery and a patrol boat from the Armed Forces of Malta was immediately dispatched to the indicated location.
After the body was recovered from the sea, it was transported to the Maritime Base at Xatt it-Tiben.
Duty Magistrate Monica Borg Galea was informed of the case and appointed several experts to assist in the inquiry she has opened.
Police investigations are ongoing.
