Mixed-Martial Arts Fighter replaces US Homeland Security Secretary

Oklahoma Senator and mixed-martial arts fighter, Markwayne Mullin, has replaced Kristi Noem as Homeland Security Secretary after Secretary Noem has been embroiled in spending sandals in her department including the purchase and use of a luxury aircraft for travel purposes. Her tenure however has been marred by a series of abuses and violent incidents by Immigration and Customs Department (ICE) that included two murders of US citizens by ICE officers.

Lawmakers from both parties had also criticised a multi-million-dollar government advertising campaign and other expenditures, while congressional hearings also scrutinised the departmentโ€™s use of resources and internal management.

The controversy ultimately led to growing political pressure in Washington, with several lawmakers, including Republicans, demanding her resignation or removal. President Trump announced that Mullin would take over the department, pending Senate confirmation, marking the first major cabinet change of his second presidential term.
