Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been awarded the European Order of Merit, in the first issuing of the award by the European Parliament. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and former Polish President Lech Wałęsa are among the first recipients at the highest level of the honour.
Angela Merkel is one of the most divisive figures in the history of European and EU politics, having stewarded the EU during the financial crisis amid accusations of bias towards Germany and at the expense of the southern states of Europe. Her legacy is also marked by policies that made Europe increasingly dependent on Russian energy, as well as her constant and regular appeasement of Vladimir Putin — policies which ultimately led to the biggest energy crisis in Europe since the Second World War.
The European Order of Merit is an honour awarded to individuals in recognition of their contributions to European cooperation, culture, public service, or achievements that promote the values and development of Europe. It is typically granted by European organisations or institutions that seek to recognise work that strengthens European integration and collaboration among countries.
Recipients of the European Order of Merit may come from different fields, including politics, academia, business, diplomacy, and civil society. The distinction is usually awarded during official ceremonies and may include a medal, insignia, or certificate recognising the recipient’s contribution.
The purpose of the award is to acknowledge individuals whose work has had a significant impact on European society or on cooperation between European states and institutions.
