Deborah Schembri has responded to criticism that the Labour government intends to install a dictatorship by once again repeating the argument that, because the government was elected by a majority, it has the legitimate and democratic right to appoint any Chief Justice it chooses.
She made her point in an article published in the media outlet owned by the General Workers’ Union, Talk.mt.
Deborah Schembri was previous Junior Minister for Planning and the Labour Party is once again pushing her as an election candidate to oust disgraced ex-Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo, from parliament.
Obviously, this disingenuous argument is aimed at the Labour Party’s audience and not the educated audience, who has a basic knowledge about civil society and the state. A democratic state requires the branch of the Judiciary to be independent from the executive. On the other hand, the Labour Party is attempting to conduct a wholesale capture of the Judiciary by appointing its loyal nominees through an interview process. The Prime Minister is also engaging in very unusual and highly irregular private and confidential discussions with the Judiciary.
Deborah Schembri is not stupid and she knows all of this. However, she is an amoral and unprincipled mercenary who will parrot anything the Labour propaganda machine says. She is not making these arguments because she genuinely believes that a democratic society requires the full capture of the Judiciary by the government.
They are basically selling the idea of a dictatorship to the Labour audience and normalising their status quo. This is not a political debate by “genuine people” – this is deviousness in its most blatant manner.
