Shocking confessions by the Prime Minister

Yesterday, in a doorstep press conference, Prime Minister Robert Abela said that he had met with members of the judiciary to discuss the nomination for Chief Justice. He made this statement nonchalantly, adding that it was necessary for him to meet members of the judiciary to inquire about their interest in, and suitability for, the post.

The Prime Minister also said that Opposition spokesperson Joe Giglio has also been meeting with members of the Judiciary over the nomination.

The confession was made in reaction to Judge Lawrence Mintoff’s letter which revealed that the Prime Minister met with him and told him that he doesn’t want to accept Alex Borg’s nominations for Chief Justice so as not elevate him politically.

These meetings are highly irregular and blatantly unconstitutional. The Prime Minister has turned the selection process for the post of Chief Justice into an interview process under his guidance, holding unconstitutional and irregular meetings with members of the Judiciary to discuss their career prospects. Joe Giglio is also holdings these meetings while simultaneously serving as a criminal-lawyer in Courts.

The Judiciary is being compromised by the Prime Minister and the Opposition’s spokesperson for Justice and both of them should resign from their position. They have tainted and compromised the Judiciary and are contributing to the erosion of independence of state institutions.

This is a total mess and it is mostly the Prime Minister to blame who has usurped this process in an attempt to establish his personal dictatorship.

In addition, I don’t understand how it was only Judge Lawrence Mintoff who blew the whistle on these irregular meetings. Have the other Members of the Judiciary gone out of their mind? Do members of the Judiciary genuinely think they can get away with holding confidential discussions with politicians?

We need to know who are the members of the Judiciary who accepted to meet up with the Prime Minister and Joe Giglio for these very highly irregular discussions.

What a total mess.
