Should we assume that Judge Miriam Hayman also met the Prime Minister?

Following the Prime Minister’s confessions that he is holding an interview process for the post of Chief Justice and the government’s last “proposal” (more like an imposition) of its nominee for the post, Judge Miriam Hayman, we have to assume that the said Judge has already met with the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister banalised these meetings by telling the press that he is only asking Judges whether they like to be Chief Justice. Judge Lawrence Mintoff gave a different version and said that the Prime Minister told him that he won’t be accepting nominees from the Opposition Leader so as not to elevate him politically.

Now, we need to know what was discussed between Judge Miriam Hayman and the Prime Minister. These discussions are highly irregular and even unconstitutional – the selection process for the Chief Justice should not be an interview process held behind closed doors. The public deserves to know what was discussed in these meetings.

Triq tkun Gahan ta’ veru biex tissapportja dak li qed jghid il-Prim. Li kieku vera ghandu rieda tajba l-Prim, l-ewwel isib kompromess mal-Kap ta’ l-Oppozizzjoni, imbaghad jistaqsi lill-kandidat maghzul jekk jaccettax. U nassigurah li l-ebda Magistrat li ghandu l-appogg tal-Prim u l-Kap ta’ l-Oppozizzjoni mhu se jirrifjuta l-kariga. Tibqghux titnellhu bin-nies.
