The Nationalist Opposition is proposing an anti-deadlock mechanism which would be effected via a board composed of members of the Judiciary, the Legislative and the Executive. The proposal was announced by Shadow spokesperson for Home Affairs Darren Carabott during a televised debate on Il-Każin.
Darren Carabott said that the committee would potentially be composed of the Chief Justice, a Member from the Government and also a member of the Opposition.
Opposition Leader Alex Borg said that the Nationalist Party will pitch this proposal for the next general election. The Labour government wants to go ahead and install this mechanism right away while the Opposition insisted on the continuation of talks and to retain the incumbent Chief Justice in his position.
Prime Minister Robert Abela turned the nomination process for Chief Justice into an interview process and has refused to come to a compromise with the Opposition over the choice of Chief Justice.
