The Prime Minister has just announced on social media that he will be proposing a law to remove the two-thirds parliamentary majority-approval for the nomination approval of Chief Justice. He described his proposal as an “anti-deadlock” mechanism. He is also blaming the Opposition for the so called “deadlock” and also said the Opposition agrees with his proposal.
The Opposition has never proposed to remove the two-thirds majority process and Opposition Leader Alex Borg insisted he is ready to continue discussing with the government to find a nominee. The Opposition has also rejected the Prime Minister’s latest proposal to appoint Judge Miriam Hayman as Chief Justice.
The Prime Minister has been pushing his own preferred candidates for Chief Justice expecting the Opposition to accept his proposals. The government has treated the post for Chief Justice as an asset it should acquire via an interview process instead of mediating the nomination with the Opposition to arrive at an agreeable candidate.
