Kevin Camilleri is set to be appointed as Secretary-General of the General Workers’ Union after the resignation of incumbent Josef Bugeja. Kevin Camilleri has also been appointed interim Secretary-General until the official confirmation is made by the union’s general conference.
Born in 1973, Kevin Camilleri worked in the hospitality sector and was a long-time Union activist including shop steward. He’s also a lecturer at the the Malta Institute of Tourism Studies. He was elected Deputy-Secretary General of the GWU in 2015 and also represented the union in the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development.
Kevin Camilleri has been a strong advocate for higher wages and equal treatment in the workplace.
In his farewell speech, Josef Bugeja said that his tenure was marked with the union’s financial challenges and the risk of losing its main headquarters building in Valletta. He said that he leaves the Union stronger and more stable. He emphasised on the union’s work on advocating for equal pay for equal work and highlighted the challenges of the changing dynamics of work-places especially with AI. He also remarked that union has defended the rights of platform and temporary-contract workers and appealed for continuity of the union’s work.
