We control the University: we have the majority

Continuing its trend in capturing all state institutions, the Labour government is going to appoint its own loyal appointee as Rector of the University following agreement between the government and the lecturers over salaries and conditions.

Professor Frank Bezzina is a opro-Rector at the University of Malta and was previously the Dean of Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy (FEMA). The Labour government has also appointed him to a number of positions in public institutions.

In 2018 he was appointed to the board of the Central Bank of Malta. In February 2020, he was also appointed non-executive chairperson of WasteServ Malta Ltd, the state-owned company responsible for waste management infrastructure in Malta.

In June 2022, the Labour government appointed Bezzina as Acting President of the Republic when President George Vella was abroad. The appointment was made under Article 49 of the Maltese Constitution, which allows for a temporary acting president when the head of state is unavailable, however the appointment generated criticism by the Opposition stating it had not been consulted on the choice (we have the majority, we do whatever we like).

Frank Bezzina is also a business associate of Vince Marmara, the pro-Labour Party pollster who also does polls for the Labour Party.

Iโ€™m happy to hear Frank Bezzinaโ€™s argument, as an economist, on why the national university is more efficient under government control rather than under private and independent management.
