Deborah Schembri, a lawyer and previous Labour Party MP has penned an article in MaltaToday that plays intellectual gymnastics to condemn the Opposition for opposing the Labour government’s proposed dictatorial takeover of the judiciary. She also describes Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera as academic, erudite and efficient (she is none of these). Schembri also makes an argument against the two-thirds majority for the choice of the chief Justice.
Deborah Schembri is not stupid and she knows what “national consensus” means but she has no shame in writing this mercenary-propaganda because in the absence of intellectuals, the Labour government is able to conjure intellectual gymnastics with little contestation. MaltaToday is also actively supporting Labour’s proposed takeover of the Judiciary and Deborah Schembri is currently a member of the Board of the Building and Construction Authority.
The Labour Party and its mercenaries are telling us in our faces that they don’t want to live in a democracy and that instead they prefer a one-party dictatorship where all politics is mediated through the Labour Party. This blatant and outright promotion of dictatorship via the takeover of all state institutions is being normalised while the Labour Party is actively producing fake stories and conspiracy theories about the Opposition. Ultimately, those who are actively promoting this form of dictatorship have no good will and are only in politics to seek their interests: these individuals are openly telling us in our faces that they want full ownership of the State under the Labour Party brand.
The Labour Party is making no secret of its authoritarianism and we should be increasingly alarmed at how Labour keeps pushing its authoritarianism in an uncontested manner.
