The Prime Minister pitches a dictatorship with Chief Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera

News is being broken in the Maltese press that the Prime Minister is pitching Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera for Chief Judge to effectively turn Malta into a Labour Party dictatorship. If this proposal goes through, the Labour government could have effective and executive control over the Judiciary, apart from already having absolute executive and direct control over the Attorney-General’s Office and the Police.

The Opposition would be insane to go along with this proposal: it needs a two-thirds majority in Parliament to go through. But I’m pretty sure that the Labour government is only doing this for maximum leverage to then pitch another acolyte as a pseudo-compromise candidate.
