Opposition Leader Alex Borg has written a letter to the Prime Minister requesting further discussions on the nomination of Chief Justice. The appointment needs to be approved by a two-thirds majority of members of Parliament. The Opposition is objecting to the Prime Minister’s nomination of Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera for the position of Chief Justice, although they did not underline this explicitly.
The Prime Minister failed to inform the Opposition Leader about his nomination before presenting it to Parliament and the Opposition Leader accused the Prime Minister of acting against the national interest. Alex Borg previously said that the Prime Minister had committed to him to hold private discussions in advance about the nominations but failed to keep his word.
Opposition Leader Alex Borg also said in his letter that, originally, the Prime Minister had proposed a different name from that of Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera.
Meanwhile, Opposition MPs are rallying behind the Leader of Opposition after ONE News, the Labour Party’s propaganda arm, denied the claims made by Alex Borg.
