Joseph Muscat goes to Azerbaijan

Disgraced ex-Prime Minister Joseph Muscat is at the Global Baku Forum: President Ilham Aliyev’s talking shop of friends and allies. It is organised by the Nizami Ganjavi International Center, which is a government funded entity. Also at the conference there’s  former European Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos, and former European Council President Charles Michel.

While the event is presented as an international dialogue platform, the Global Baku Forum also serves as a tool of soft power for the government of the dictator Ilham Aliyev. By hosting well-known political figures and international personalities, the forum helps promote Azerbaijan’s image abroad and project the country as a diplomatic hub, despite its oppression of dissidents and political opposition figures. Azerbaijan, however avoids a lot of criticism by the EU thanks to Azeri lobbying in the EU and its position as an energy supplier to Europe.

Chinese government officials are also present to the conference discussing energy and security issues.
