ASA reaffirms zero-tolerance stance amid betting allegations, seeks official report

The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA) has issued a statement in response to recent media reports, including an article published by Times of Malta, concerning allegations involving several water polo players and a coach in relation to betting activities.

The ASA clarified that the same report specifies that the coach mentioned in the headline is not a Malta national team coach.

Reaffirming its position, the Association stressed that it treats any issue related to sporting integrity with the utmost seriousness, maintaining a strict zero-tolerance policy towards any breaches, including those linked to betting.

In this context, the ASA confirmed that it has formally requested access to the relevant report held by the Malta Gaming Authority. It explained that, until recently, there was no formal legal mechanism in place for such information to be shared. As a result, the Association has initiated the necessary legal procedures to obtain the report.

The ASA also noted that a formal framework for the exchange of such sensitive information is currently being established through the Office of the ASA Integrity Officer, ensuring that all processes comply fully with legal and regulatory requirements.

Until the report is officially and lawfully received, the ASA stated that it is not in a position to take any disciplinary action, nor would it be appropriate to draw conclusions regarding those involved. The Association emphasised the importance of due process and safeguarding the rights of all parties.

However, it added that once the report is received, and depending on its findings, it will act promptly and take any necessary measures in line with its regulations and international standards.

The ASA reiterated its commitment to protecting the integrity of aquatic sports in Malta and confirmed it will continue working closely with relevant authorities, including the Malta Gaming Authority, the Authority for Integrity in Maltese Sport, and the Malta Police Force.

The Association also called for responsible reporting and restraint while the matter remains under review.
