Luxembourg took a decisive step towards retaining their League C status with a 2-0 win over Malta at Ta’ Qali, punishing the hosts for a series of missed chances in a frustrating first-leg encounter.
Despite an encouraging performance for long stretches, Malta were left to rue poor finishing, while Luxembourg showed clinical edge when it mattered most.
Head coach Emilio De Leo made two changes to his starting XI, with Enrico Pepe coming into defence and Paul Mbong replacing his suspended brother Joseph Mbong. Midfielder Teddy Teuma marked a milestone appearance, earning his 50th international cap.
Kick-off was delayed by around eight minutes due to VAR communication issues, and once play got underway, Luxembourg controlled much of the possession. Malta, however, created the first opening when a defensive slip by Laurent Jans allowed Ilyas Chouaref a chance, only for Dirk Carlson to recover in time.
Luxembourg came close midway through the half through Vincent Thill, whose angled effort drifted narrowly wide. Malta responded with a flowing move involving Teuma and Irvin Cardona, but Matthew Guillaumier failed to trouble goalkeeper Anthony Moris with his finish.
Malta’s momentum was disrupted on 37 minutes when Teuma was forced off injured, yet the hosts finished the half strongly. In stoppage time, Cardona missed from close range after good work by Alex Satariano and Paul Mbong, before Jans nearly turned the ball into his own net, striking the post under pressure.
The second half began in similar fashion, with Malta creating chances but failing to convert. Paul Mbong missed a clear opportunity from close range, and the hosts were made to pay moments later. Vincent Thill ghosted in unmarked at the far post to convert Florian Bohnert’s cross and give Luxembourg the lead.
Malta struggled to regain their rhythm after conceding. Chouaref tested Moris from distance, but further chances went begging—first when Chouaref hesitated in the box, and later when Satariano failed to hit the target from close range following a Zach Muscat delivery.
A golden chance arrived late on when substitute Brandon Paiber set up Cardona, whose cross found Trent Buhagiar, but the forward somehow failed to convert from point-blank range.
Luxembourg sealed the result deep into stoppage time in fortunate fashion, as Mathias Olesen scored directly from a corner to make it 2-0.
Malta now face an uphill task in the return leg, which will be played next Tuesday at the Stade de Luxembourg in Kirchberg, where they must overturn a two-goal deficit to keep their hopes alive.
