Addio Elio Lombardi – a creative giant passes away

Malta has lost one of its most distinctive and prolific artistic voices with the passing of Elio Lombardi, a man whose life was defined by creativity, perseverance and an unwavering passion for the arts. His death was announced earlier today by his family at the grand old age of 92.

Born in 1933, Lombardiโ€™s love for performance and expression emerged at a young age, nurtured through his early involvement in acting and singing. Over the decades, he evolved into a true all-round artistโ€”film director, writer, painter, tailor and even make-up artistโ€”leaving behind a remarkably diverse legacy.

He is best remembered for his extraordinary contribution to Maltese cinema. Starting his filmmaking journey in the early 1980s, Lombardi went on to write, direct and produce over 200 films, often working independently and overcoming limited resources with ingenuity and determination. His debut short film, A Friend in Need, won first prize and set the tone for a lifetime of storytelling through the lens.

Among his most notable works was Pepita Gomez, which drew the attention of internationally renowned producer Michael Klingerโ€”a moment that highlighted the potential of Lombardiโ€™s work beyond Maltaโ€™s shores.

Yet Lombardiโ€™s creativity extended far beyond film. He authored several novels, painted extensively, sang Italian and Neapolitan songs, and spent 27 years contributing his skills as a make-up artist for the Good Friday procession in ฤฆal Qormi. His artistic spirit was not confined to one disciplineโ€”it was a lifelong calling that touched multiple facets of Maltese culture.

Recognition at last

His contribution did not go unnoticed. In 2020, he was awarded the Midalja gฤงall-Qadi tar-Repubblika in recognition of his service to the nation, and later received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Malta Cine Circle, honouring decades of dedication to local filmmaking.

Lombardi also came from a lineage steeped in creativity, continuing a family tradition of writing and storytelling that spanned generations. Despite the passage of time, he remained active well into his later years, continuing to work on new film projects into his late 80sโ€”a testament to his relentless drive and passion.

He was married to Marija, who passed away in 2018. They had four children โ€” Gino, Zep, Aldo and Louiselle, as well as several grandchildren and greatโ€‘grandchildren.

Addio Elio…..
