Cinema attendance in Malta continues to decline: Maltese films net €75,654 total at box office

According to the latest NSO statistics, cinema attendance in Malta continued its downward trend in 2025, declining by approximately 4.6% compared to 2024 figures. A total of 530,232 admissions were recorded in 2025, down from 555,858 the previous year. Most of the films watched were produced in the United States, accounting for 83% of total screenings.

There were six cinema establishments operating across Malta and Gozo, with a combined total of 23 screens. Gross box office receipts reached €4,209,254.

The most popular film titles during the year were Lilo and Stitch, A Minecraft Movie and The Conjuring: Last Rites, accounting for 7%, 5.6% and 3.5% of total admissions respectively.

Maltese productions—many of which fell under the short film category rather than feature-length films—registered 10,882 admissions and generated a total gross box office revenue of €75,654.

In terms of film duration, the majority of screenings had a running time between 76 and 120 minutes, representing 57.4% of all films shown.

By genre, fiction (non-animation) dominated cinema programming, accounting for 60.3 per cent of all first-time releases screened in local cinemas.
