The Environmental and Resources Authority have approved a request by the government to avoid an Environmental Impact Assessment over its new ferry-moor project in Marsascala. The project, which has been strongly pushed by the Minister for Transport as part of his campaign to add alternative public transport services, has been opposed by residents over environmental and pollution concerns.
The government has rushed with this project without local consultation and is now being accused of avoiding legal procedures in the planning process. The Minister for Transport Chris Bonett is insisting that the government is doing the project according to the law.
MEP Peter Agius visited the locality and met with the concerned residents. He criticised the government for avoiding an environmental impact assessment over a project in an area which hosts local ecosystems and species including the local algae Posidonia.
The fast-ferry services are becoming increasingly popular in Malta but the government’s policy of increasing alternative modes of transport has so far not been significantly helpful in reducing traffic congestion, let alone reduce the number of cars on the roads.
