Swieqi United and Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s surge to the summit of BOV Challenge League

The race for promotion reached a fever pitch on Saturday as Swieqi United and Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s both secured vital victories to leapfrog their rivals and take joint leadership of the BOV Challenge League Top 8 standings.

At the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Swieqi United delivered a statement performance, dismantling local rivals Melita with a clinical 5-0 victory. The Owls wasted no time asserting their dominance, with Augusto Caseres finding the back of the net just two minutes into the match.

The pressure remained relentless, and Kian Leonardi doubled the advantage from the penalty spot on the half-hour mark. The second half saw no respite for Melita; Caseres completed his brace in the 57th minute before a quick-fire double from Daniel Agius (65’) and Salam Kojo Mawuena (67’) put the result beyond any doubt.

Across at the Centenary Stadium, Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s matched Swieqi’s ambition with a determined 3-1 win over St. Andrews. The Saints established a commanding lead within the first half-hour, starting with a 3rd-minute opener from Daniel Zerafa.

Paul Lapira extended the lead in the 13th minute, and Duvan Mosquera looked to have sealed the contest five minutes before the interval with a third goal. Although St. Andrews showed signs of life in the second half—with Elizeu converting a 51st-minute penalty—Birżebbuġa held firm to secure the three points.

With these results, the battle for the top spot has tightened significantly. Both Swieqi and Birżebbuġa now sit at the peak with 42 points, holding a narrow one-point lead over their nearest challengers.
