China harasses Taiwan with its coast guard and navy as Taiwanese Opposition Leader pleads for peace

China has deployed up to 100 coast guard vessels, warplanes and naval vessels at the maritime borders of Taiwan as Taiwanese Opposition Leader Cheng Li-Wun went on a trip to Beijing to advocate for peace with China. China has been harassing Taiwan with increasingly larger military, air and naval drills across its maritime frontiers as Xi Jinping ups his calls for his conquest of Taiwan.

Cheng Li-Wun arrived in Shanghai earlier this week and met with Xi Jinping earlier today. During the visit, Cheng called for peaceful dialogue across the Taiwan Strait, while Xi reiterated Beijing’s long-standing position in favour of “reunification.” Taiwan’s Foreing Minuister Chiu Chui-Cheng, urged Cheng Li-Wun to tell the Chinese government to stop its harassment of Taiwan’s borders.

The Kuomintang (KMT) in Taiwan is currently the main opposition party, following the rise of the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as the dominant political force in recent years. The KMT, which traces its roots to mainland China, has governed Taiwan since 1945 after the end of Japanese rule, but gradually lost its political dominance as Taiwan transitioned into a full democracy. The parties are also divided by ethnic lines with the KMT representing the Chinese minority and the DPP representing the ethnic Taiwanese.

You can find the official statement by the Chinese government here.

The map below, described as the “Taiwan cage map” was issued by the government of Taiwan prior to Cheng Li-Wun’s trip and shows the position of Chinese naval vessels around Taiwan.
