Malta celebrated International Pet’s Day with animal sanctuaries and organisations holding various events to promote awareness for animal adoption and against animal cruelty. MSPCA held an event at Hastings Garden.
Other organisations and stakeholders also took part in the initiative, with the event in Valletta bringing together families, pet owners, and animal welfare groups in a day focused on education and community engagement. Information stalls were set up to provide guidance on responsible pet ownership, while fundraising activities were organised in aid of abandoned animals.
Activities throughout the day included interactive sessions for children, opportunities for pet adoption awareness, and outreach campaigns highlighting the importance of animal welfare in Maltese society. Organisers stressed that such events are crucial in encouraging responsible ownership and reducing cases of neglect and abandonment.
The initiative also forms part of a broader push to integrate animal welfare more prominently into everyday life, with authorities noting that a significant proportion of Maltese households own pets. This has led to increased calls for stronger policies, more open spaces such as dog parks, and continued collaboration between government and voluntary organisations working in the sector.
Animal welfare groups reiterated that while awareness events are important, sustained action is needed throughout the year, particularly in addressing abandonment, illegal breeding, and cases of cruelty.
