EU High Representative says Russia is the main culprit in the breakdown of the international rules-based order

Yesterday at the United Nations Security Council, the EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, declared Russia as the main culprit of the breakdown in the international rules based order. She also added that the conflict in the Middle East is also another main contributor to this breakdown in international legal order, but held back from specifically naming the perpetrators.

Replying to the absurd claims of the Russian representative at the Untied Nations, the EU High Representative added that Russia did not understand that Europe’s security architecture can not be made by force and fear of Russia in Europe is rooted in past experiences of Russian invasions.

Vice-Commissioner Kallas made these remarks to underscore why Europe’s support for the United Nations is more vital than ever amid today’s global challenges. She emphasised that, although EU member states represent just 5% of the world’s population, they provide 42% of global Official Development Assistance and fund roughly a quarter of the UN’s regular budget, paying in full and on time. However, she stressed that the EU’s commitment goes far beyond financial contributions. The EU supports the UN because it is the only truly universal international system that stands for peace, represents the global collective interest, and protects international law.
