Peter Magyar vows Eurozone ascension and no veto the EU loan to Ukraine in his first press conference

Asked about his position on Ukraine by Kyiv Independent during his lengthy press conference following the announcement of his election victory, Peter Magyar described anyone who urges a European country that was invaded to give up territory as a “traitor” and this is what the Fidesz Party was trying to do he said.

Magyar also said that Ukraine had the right to defend itself especially after the Budapest Memorandum which obliged it to give up its nuclear weapons in exchange of security guarantees. He said that he hopes to establish good relations with Ukraine and said that he hopes that Ukraine will also grant language rights to Hungarians in Ukraine which is not a big ask, he said.

However he does not think that Ukraine be given fast-track membership status to the European Union given that Ukraine is still at war. He also committed himself not to lift the veto from the EU’s โ‚ฌ90 billion loan to Ukraine.ย Magyar also announced that Foreign Minister Pรฉter Szijjรกrtรณ and his team had visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and shredded confidential documents about Hungary’s contacts and relations with Russia.

The Prime Minister-elect reiterated his campaign promise to join the Eurozone, citing Bulgariaโ€™s successful accession as a sign that Hungaryโ€™s own path to adopting the Euro could also be successful.
