Footballer and physical education teacher Jurgen Pisani has been sentenced to 15 months in prison after being found guilty of involvement in the manipulation of a sporting event.
The case dates back to the final match of the 2023/24 season, played on May 3, 2024, between Santa Lucia FC and Birkirkara FC. On that day, Santa Lucia were fighting for survival and needed a win to remain in the Premier League, while Birkirkara had already secured qualification for the UEFA Europa League.
In addition to the effective prison term, Pisani has been handed a 10-year ban from participating in or attending any sporting event, as well as being prohibited from entering the premises of any sports organisation.
In a further twist, Pisani had featured in St Patrickโs most recent match last Saturday against Birkirkara, bringing added attention to the case and its implications within the local football scene. Pisani had previously been suspended from all football activity by the Malta Football Association pending the outcome of the case.
