Earlier today, a French soldier serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was killed, and three others were wounded in a deliberate small-arms fire attack in the village of Ghandouriyeh, in the south of Lebanon.
The UNIFIL team was clearing a road from mines to reopen access to an isolated UNIFIL post, which had been cut off due to prior fighting in the area between Hezbollah and Israeli forces. The UNIFIL team was ambushed while they were conducting their demining operation.ย
The killed peacekeeper has been identified as Staff Sergeant Florian Montorio, from Franceโs 17th Parachute Engineer Regiment based in Montauban. He died from a direct gunshot wound. Two of the three wounded soldiers were seriously injured. The UNIFIL team did not return fire.ย
Senior Hezbollah official Mahmoud Qamati has been quoted by Al-Jazeera as saying that the ceasefire will not be respected because Hezbollah won’t surrender to Israel.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said that Israel is no longer allowed to bomb Lebanon. The US has brokered a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah and the President Trump also hinted he is supporting the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah.
However, Israel is still taking a very aggressive approach to the ceasefire agreement, and earlier today has conducted shelling operations in the city of Khiam in the south of Lebanon and also announced a new border called the “yellow-line” in South Lebanon.
