Shaky ceasefire in Lebanon begins: talks with Iran may continue

There was celebratory gunfire in Beirut, after a US-brokered ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel in Lebanon was effected yesterday night. A meeting in Washington earlier this week between the two parties proved unsuccessful. President Trump also said that Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will also be meeting for talks.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said that Israel’s non-conditional demands are the immediate disarmament of Hezbollah and “peace through strength” Israel fired artillery shells in at least two villages earlier this morning.

Meanwhile, Iran received Pakistan’s military chief, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, who mediated talks between Iran and the US in preparation for a potential continuation of talks between the parties. Previous talks collapsed as the Iranian regime refused the US demands to give uranium enrichment.

Israel has killed more 2,000 people during its brief war with Hezbollah in Lebanon many of them civilians. Up to 1.2 million people mainly from the south of Lebanon remain displaced.
