Hamas has terrorised Palestinians in Gaza before municipal elections took place yesterday, in which up to one million Palestinians cast their vote. Voting in Gaza was very low as Palestinians feared for their lives if they took part in the elections.
On Friday, Hamas attacked Palestinian civilians in the Al-Rimal neighbourhood attacking the Wahidi family in the Al-Rayyes block (Gaza City). Footage is provided below.
Hamas has been consolidating their power in Gaza by purging dissidents and inflicting terror on the residential population.
Only up to 70,000 Palestinians from Dejr al-Balah were eligible to vote and only up to 22% of these voters actually voted. The voting turnout in the West Bank was up to 54%.
The Fatah Party dominated most of the electoral lists, reflecting both its stronger organisational presence in areas where voting could take place more freely and the absence of open political competition in Gaza under Hamas rule.
International reporting has also noted that Palestinian elections remain deeply fragmented, with Gaza and the West Bank operating under separate political authorities. The climate of fear and repression in Gaza continues to undermine any attempt at democratic participation, leaving many Palestinians effectively disenfranchised despite the formal holding of elections.
Elections were held simultaneously in Gaza and the West Bank to project a unified Palestinian state.
