Underwhelming Nationalist Party press conference on its pledge to reduce electricity bills

The Nationalist Party is holding a very underwhelming press conference with Opposition Leader Alex Borg and Energy spokesperson Mark Anthony Sanmut explaining their pledge to reduce electricity bills by a further 30%. The measures do not include macro-economic reforms or new systematic energy plans and projects.

The measures include a list of mitigating price measures with regard to ARMS billing. A measure also includes a reduction in the electricity bill for farmers. The Nationalist Party also pledged a further €60 million investment in solar panels in public buildings.

The government has spent up to €1.5 billion in electricity and fuel subsidies since 2020 to keep electricity and fuel prices low. The Labour government supposedly has a long-term plan to wean off subsidies by transition to non-renewable energy sources but this plan does not exist. The Nationalist Party seems to be in accordance with the government’s strategy, albeit with some minor tweaks.
