Opposition Leader announces oil and gas bunkering in Hurd’s Bank as “new economic niche”

Opposition Leader Alex Borg announced earlier today that he pledges to create a new Maritime Hub in Hurd’s Bank to create “a new economic niche”. He said that the new economic niche will serve to provide bunkering services to ships passing through Hurd’s Bank, and added that the maritime hub will be mounted with a gas terminal and this gas terminal will also be used for the power station in Malta.

He said that this industry would generate up to โ‚ฌ450 million every year, and emphasised that the new element with this project is the gas terminal.

Oil refueling services to ships passing through Hurd’s Bank are already provided by Maltese bunkering companies via ship-to-ship refuelling. The Maltese bunkering companies make use of Alkagesta for oil supply which effectively serves as Malta’s biggest bunkerer having current use of the Freeport oil terminal.

The Opposition Leader is working closely with Ann Fenech from the local maritime sector with regard to his maritime proposals.
