British Labour loses Wales stronghold to pro-EU separatists Plaid Cymru in devastating Council elections

Plaid Cymru, led by Rhun ap Iorwerth, has won the Welsh Senedd elections for the first time in history, ending Labour’s century-long dominance over Welsh politics. Plaid Cymru came first with 35.4% of the vote, followed by Reform UK with 29.3% of the vote. Labour won just 13.7% of the vote.

The Welsh Labour Party leader, Eluned Morgan, has resigned after declaring that she takes full responsibility of the result. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also said that he takes full responsibility over the result but said that he won’t resign and plunging the country into chaos.

Labour has suffered a devastating result losing up to 1000 Council seats and achieving just up to 16% of the total share of the vote. Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, won up to 1200 Council seats with around 27% of the vote. The Conservatives followed with 20% of the vote losing up to 500 seats. The Lib Dems gained 98 seats winning up to 14% of the vote. Labour has lost several traditional strognholds including Barnsley, Gateshead and Sunderland.

Calls are growing within the Labour Party for Keir Starmer to resign as Labour in the UK continues to haemorrhage support.
