Passengers travelling on the 6.45am Gozo Channel ferry from Gozo to Malta experienced major delays on Monday morning after the vessel encountered a technical malfunction shortly after departing from Mฤกarr Harbour.
The incident coincides with a general election campaign in which both major parties have promised an increase in vessels due to the current ones being over 25 years old. Gozo Channel also leases the MV Nikolaus, a Greek ship that is almost 40 years old.
Commuters aboard the MV Gaudos said the ferry suddenly lost power just minutes into the journey, causing the vessel to come to a halt at sea.
Passengers were informed that the ferry was experiencing technical difficulties and remained stranded for around 20 minutes before the vessel slowly resumed its course towards ฤirkewwa.
Several commuters said they were not provided with further updates during the disruption, leading to growing frustration among those travelling to work or appointments in Malta.
The crossing, which normally takes around 25 minutes, eventually lasted close to an hour, with the ferry docking after 7.45am.
Upon arrival, passengers hurried towards their vehicles and the passenger terminal in an attempt to make up for lost time.
Gozo Channel later confirmed that the technical issue had been resolved and stated that ferry operations would continue according to schedule.
The company also confirmed that the MV Gaudos would remain in service throughout the day.
