Europe sends warships to the Persian Gulf as Trump-Iran negotiations stall

France and the UK both have warships en route to the Persian Gulf to commence security operations aimed at securing free passage for commercial shipping, as negotiations between the US administration and the Iranian regime have stalled, with the Strait of Hormuz remaining blocked from both sides.

Despite attempts by the US Navy to re-open the Strait of Hormuz for commercial shipping, many ships remained trapped inside the Gulf with hundreds of oil tankers and 42 major cargo-vessels unable to exit the strait. The potential involvement of the UK and France in the Strait of Hormuz may indicate lack of hope about a future settlement over the strait.

The UK government announced that HMS Dragon was already en route to the Strait of Hormuz while the French flagship carrier Charles De Gaulle has arrived at the Gulf of Aden.

It is yet unclear to what extent will the European warships will be involved in securing the strait for commercial shipping but both the UK and France have asserted that they will contribute their navies to secure the strait. EU High Commissioner Kaja Kallas is supporting the expansion of the EU naval operations in the Gulf Aden (Aspides) to secure commercial shipping across the the Arabian Sea.

Discussions were held between UK Defence Secretary John Healey and European Defence Ministers earlier today as part of the EU Council meeting.
