Strait of Hormuz remains closed to Western shipping: oil opens above $100

The Strait of Hormuz remains closed to Western shipping as negotiations between the US President and the Iranian regime continue to consist of a constant back-and-forth exchange of proposals, which are being equally rejected by both sides. Both sides exchange fire earlier this month and Iran also targeted a number of Western commercial vessels.

Over the weekend, a fire broke out near the UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Power Plant but no facilities of the power plant were affected and no statement was issued by Iran on the incident.

Iran is demanding full authority over the Strait of Hormuz along with sanctions relief while the US is demanding restoration of the previous status quo at the Strait of Hormuz and a significant limitation of Iran’s nuclear power generation. The US is also demanding Iran to hand over its enriched uranium stockpile . Iran is also demanding war reparations and the unfreezing of its assets.

President Trump is urging the Iranian regime to make a deal or face another wave of attacks.

Europe is also demanding the immediate re-opening of the strait and the UK and France are sending warships to the Persian Gulf for security operations with regard to commercial shipping, once a peace deal is agrred, although details are scarce. France’s Charles De Gaulle is currently at the Gulf of Aden and HMS Dragon is en route.

Oil is currently hovering above $101 as of writing.
