Secretary Marco Rubio reiterates that US position on Taiwan hasn’t change: US will not accept change of status quo Taiwan by force

Speaking to NBC in Beijing, State Secretary Marco Rubio reiterated that the position of the US on Taiwan hasn’t change and that the US will not accept a change of Taiwan’s status quo by force. The US State Secretary’s comments were made following the meeting held between the Chinese and US delegations at the Great Hall of the People.

Secretary Rubio also said that he thinks that China prefers to take Taiwan willingly, either by a vote or a referendum, but added that China’s military expansion is not meant just for Taiwan but also to project power across the globe. He said that China aims to reach the equivalent level of power that the US enjoys globally but they are not there yet.

US President Donald Trump is in China along with his cabinet members and a number of big business representatives for a high-stakes summit focusing on trade, artificial-intelligence and security. Progress has been reported on trade issue with press reports citing that China has committed to purchase more jets from Boing.

During the visit, China issued a statement warning the US government about Taiwan and that any US intervention on the issue may lead to conflict.

During the interview with NBC, the State Secretary also stated that the US did not ask China for help on Iran but asserted its position that the US does not want Iran to have a nuclear weapon and China agrees with this position.
