US President Donald Trump and Xi Jinping had many warm words of friendship to exchange between in public. Privately, details of their discussions are still scarce but the White House has issued a statement stating that both sides have discussed trade with the US side stating it discussed access to American products in the Chinese market. The White House also said that discussions were held on Chiense illegal fentanyl production and exports to the US.

The statement by the Chinese government has stressed that the issue of Taiwan is the most important element in the China-US relationship and conflict can ensue if this issue is not handled well by the US. The warning is very explicit as China makes it very clear it intends to invade Taiwan. The full statement can be found here and the Taiwan quote is being copied below.
“Xi Jinping stressed that the Taiwan issue is the most important issue in China-US relations. Once this is handled, the relationship between the two countries can remain generally stable. If not handled properly, the two countries will collide or even clash, pushing the entire China-US relationship into a very dangerous situation.โ Taiwan independenceโis incompatible with peace in the Taiwan Strait. Maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is the greatest common denominator between China and the United States. The United States must handle the Taiwan issue with extreme caution.”
US President Donald Trump may embolden and empower Xi Jinping by giving China a trade deal without prescribing conditions with regard to Taiwan’s sovereignty.
According to the Chinese statement, the two sides also discussed the Middle East.
There’s no news about Jimmy Lai so far after President Trump vowed to advocate for his release.
President Trump held a bilateral discussion with Xi Jinping along with their respective teams. He was also given a tour of the Temple of Heaven before being treated to a state banquet. The US President is being accompanied by US big business CEOs including Jensen Huang, Tim Cook and Elon Musk.
Statement by the White House
President Trump had a good meeting with President Xi of China. The two sides discussed ways to enhance economic cooperation between our two countries, including expanding market access for American businesses into China and increasing Chinese investment into our industries. Leaders from many of the United Statesโ largest companies joined a portion of the meeting. The Presidents also highlighted the need to build on progress in ending the flow of fentanyl precursors into the United States, as well as increasing Chinese purchases of American agricultural products. The two sides agreed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to support the free flow of energy. President Xi also made clear Chinaโs opposition to the militarization of the Strait and any effort to charge a toll for its use, and he expressed interest in purchasing more American oil to reduce Chinaโs dependence on the Strait in the future. Both countries agreed that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.
