Permits for new dwellings higher by 40.5% in the first Quarter of 2026

Building permits for dwellings approved in the first quarter of 2026 were 40.5% higher compared to the same quarter of last year according to the latest NSO figures. The total figure amounted to 504 building permits with a total of 3,010 dwellings.

The highest number of approved dwellings was registered in Sliema at 322 new dwellings. Most and Saint Paul’s Bay have also seen high activity.

Up 72.1% of the new dwellings are apartments.

The housing market remains extremely hot, with property sales also increasing steadily over time even as the housing affordability crisis facing younger people continues to worsen.

This article deserves more commentary. A 40.5% increase is interesting. Would I be right in thinking that developers were sensing an election and therefore applied for consents for anything and everything, confident that many would be nodded through?
