We are just two weeks away from a general election and the only political party to have published in full its electoral manifesto is ADPD. No public debates have taken place between the party leaders so far and most of the political debates are being conducted by the Labour Party’s own propagandists.
Most of the press and the information industry, including academia, is today controlled and influenced by the Labour Party and most of the political debate is strictly dumbed down propaganda. The Labour Party is also setting the Nationalist Party’s agenda as the Nationalist Party gives up on acting as an Opposition and is instead proposing the same economic policies of Peronism that Labour is ushering in.
Our fiscal policy is being mediated on the public broadcasting programmes of Ricky Caruana and Quinton Scerri.
Controversy is limited to artifically-manufactured pseudo-issues which are not issues at all such as Omar Rababa’s candidacy. Academics have also joined the controversy, effectively playing the Labour Party’s tune and sending out a message of approval to the ruling regime along the lines of: “We do not agree with your policies, but we are not negative people and therefore deserve to remain in your good books.” In doing so, academics extracted political and social currency from Labour by helping it project itself as the anti-racist and progressive alternative, while continuing to legitimise Labour’s one-party dominance in Malta. The pseudo-controversy has now shifted from Omar Rabbbah’s candidacy to whether foreign workers should be eligible for the government’s proposed “super bonus.”
Meanwhile, Joseph Muscat is growing stronger in the Labour Party, effectively turning Labour into an even bigger criminal organisation and Labour’s one-party rule consolidates. Congratulations on your intellectual achievements.
The Nationalist Party is now indirectly campaigning against dissidents with its Labour-like discourse of positioning itself “against attacks”. Rampant corruption, systematic and willing dismantling of the rule-of-law is now taboo thanks to Alex Borg, who prefers to take on the Labour Party’s agenda of Peronism and apply it by himself, albeit with a different marketing campaign and administration. We used to think that Alex Borg was a Labour Party Trojan Horse. We were very wrong about this because Alex Borg doesn’t seem to intend to hide his intention to turn PN into a conservative version of Labour. Very well-done for being positive.
No political party intends to implement capital projects – they just want to distribute as much as direct subsidies as possible to win as much as support as possible. Macroeconomics is dead and politics has become like a game of chicken with no actual political debate. The Labour Party is proposing a Third-World mono-rail – and is also building a new interconnector with Sicily to increase our energy dependence on our Italian neighbour.
There’s literally also no political debate. The campaign is revolving mostly around the theatrical press conferences of the Labour Party leader and the Nationalist Party leader who throw away pledges of direct subsidies as if there is no tomorrow. Every day it is a new episode and soon I am going to start betting with my friends in a game of GUESS TODAY’S SUBIDY.
The Labour Party is no longer making any pretenses about its devious and undemocratic misuse of the State and its institutions. We are having an early general election because the Prime Minister has the power to do so, and they are throwing it at our faces: with vile spite and the unadulterated arrogance of a ruling-elite.
