Floriana F.C. and Marsaxlokk F.C. stand just one victory away from writing their names into Maltese football history as they prepare to battle for the league title.
For Floriana, Saturdayโs showdown represents an opportunity to claim a record-extending 27th Maltese championship, while Marsaxlokk are chasing only the second league title in the clubโs history.
Based on this seasonโs performances, Floriana enter the final as favourites. The Greens have enjoyed a remarkable campaign, finishing runners-up in the Opening Round before dominating the Closing Round to secure top spot. They also remain unbeaten against Marsaxlokk this season, a statistic that could provide an important psychological advantage heading into the decisive encounter.
Floriana assistant coach Jean Paul Desira described the occasion as both a privilege and an opportunity to reward the clubโs hard work throughout the campaign. He noted the high expectations surrounding the club after several near misses in recent seasons and said the team was determined to finally reclaim the championship.
Desira praised the work carried out by the club administration during both the summer and January transfer windows, highlighting the squad rebuild and the strong mentality developed within the group. According to him, the teamโs balance, character, and belief have been key elements behind Florianaโs success this season.
Floriana captain Dunstan Vella insisted that despite their positive record against Marsaxlokk, the final must be approached with complete focus and discipline. He said the team intends to continue playing the same style of football that brought them success throughout the season and stressed the importance of maintaining the confidence and character shown in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, Marsaxlokk head into the final full of belief after emerging as one of the seasonโs biggest surprises. The southerners exceeded expectations by reaching the Final Four and then eliminating reigning champions ฤฆamrun Spartans F.C. in last weekendโs semi-final.
Coach Enzo Potenza said his players fully deserved their place in the final due to the consistency they displayed throughout the season. Although disappointed not to have beaten Floriana so far this campaign, Potenza acknowledged that Floriana deserved their victories in previous meetings.
Potenza explained that Marsaxlokkโs original objective had been European qualification, but now that they have reached the final, the team is fully focused on winning the championship. He added that despite being considered underdogs, Marsaxlokk are confident in their tactical, technical, and physical qualities, insisting the final is a genuine 50-50 contest.
The Marsaxlokk coach also credited the semi-final victory over ฤฆamrun for giving his players an important confidence boost ahead of the title decider. He described the teamโs journey as one built step by step over the last two years, with constant growth and a strong squad dynamic driving their progress.
Club captain Niki Muscat echoed that confidence, saying the squad is highly motivated to create history by winning the title. Muscat described the final as both an honour and an exciting challenge, while insisting the teamโs mentality remains one of determination and unity.
The skipper admitted that Marsaxlokk are particularly eager to finally overcome Floriana after failing to beat them this season, believing there could be no better occasion to achieve that than in a league final.
