Birkirkara FC President Michael Valenzia resigns – paving the way for Chris Cardona

Birkirkara FC President Michael Valenzia has officially resigned from his post with immediate effect, concluding a transformative five-year tenure at the helm of the Maltese Premier League club. This decision has been talked about for some time especially with consistent rumours that former Labour Minister Chris Cardona was vying for a seat on the club committee.
The decision follows growing pressure and calls for administrative change from the club’s supporters. In an emotional statement addressed directly to the community, Valenzia explained that his departure stems from listening carefully to the fanbase over recent months and reflecting deeply on his time in office. Emphasizing that he fully respects the supporters’ desire for a fresh direction, he stepped aside to allow the club to move forward and smoothly elect its next president.
Valenzia originally assumed the presidency in May 2021. His leadership era was defined by a balance of competitive success and extensive off-the-pitch modernization. Under his administration, Birkirkara FC claimed domestic silverware by winning the Maltese FA Trophy in 2023. However the rest of his tenure has been disappointing with Birkirkara playing in the Relegation Pool this season and shunted out of Europe next season.
Beyond tournament victories, Valenzia focused heavily on upgrading the club’s infrastructure and administrative frameworks. These structural improvements were vital in securing compliance with strict UEFA licensing standards, ensuring the club’s consistent eligibility for competitive European competitions.
In his final address, Valenzia stated that serving the club had been one of the greatest honors and privileges of his life. He concluded by expressing his deep gratitude to the inner committee members who managed daily operations alongside him, as well as the collective fanbase, noting that football clubs are nothing without the passion and loyalty of their supporters.
The Birkirkara FC committee is now expected to convene to outline the transitional management process and establish a timeline for the upcoming presidential elections.
